Here is some information I found regarding fuel consumption during idling:

CARS:

Average Passenger Car Uses 0.026 gallons/10minutes of idling. This is equivalent to 0.156 gal/hour.

HEAVY DUTY DIESEL TRUCKS:

The average heavy duty truck burns 0.8 gallons diesel/hour while idling.

NOTE: For START, I'd recommend actually measuring what your busses use while idling the next time you are required to idle for a significant period of time. Simply top of the bus prior to idling, record the amount of idle time, and top off at the end.

And, one more thing, I've run across research that states that the strategy of not running your car's air conditioner to save fuel is a myth. The a/c really doesn't effect fuel efficiency significantly - so we can delete this from our driver education strategies.
